PHILIPUS
Neo Oriental, Black & Gray & Dark Art
Meet Philipus
Philipus is a Japanese style tattoo artist at Killer Silver Tattoo in Scarsdale, Westchester NY. Indonesian-born and tattooing since 2002, he ran his own shop in Flushing, Queens for about a decade, building his name on Neo Oriental work, the style most clients know as Japanese, alongside deep black & gray and dark art.
His work is atmospheric, precise, and rooted in Japanese-influenced composition, combining Eastern structure with the tonal control of black & gray. Every session uses Killer Silver Ink, REACH-certified since 2013.
A decade of tattooing in Flushing, one of New York's most Asian neighborhoods, shaped how he approaches oriental subjects. Warriors, geishas, cranes, tigers and birds are built on traditional Eastern layouts, then rendered with the smooth gradients and depth of black & gray. The result sits between classic Japanese tattooing and modern realism: bold enough to read from across a room, detailed enough to reward a closer look.
That range runs through his whole portfolio. Alongside his Neo Oriental pieces, he tattoos black & gray portraits, animals and religious imagery, and a darker body of work drawn from the anatomy, skulls and demon figures that fill his sketchbooks.
His tattooing is grounded in fine art. He keeps drawing and studying at the Art Students League and the National Academy, and that practice of observation, line and atmosphere is what gives his oriental and black & gray work its depth. Larger pieces, like his geisha sleeve, show how he carries a composition across the body.
He works at Killer Silver Tattoo by appointment, traveling in from New York City on the day you agree together, so every session is planned and unhurried.
Available by appointment only.

Outside the studio, Philipus continues his fine-art practice through drawing and ongoing study at the Art Students League and the National Academy. That same discipline of observation, line, and atmosphere feeds directly back into his tattoo work.
